Where You Can See Masterpieces of Vincent van Gogh | Galleries and Museums | RatePunk

Vincent van Gogh is undoubtedly the most famous Renaissance Master on the planet. His works are widely exhibited in many galleries and museums around the world. So it might be challenging to find the gallery which shows the original “The Starry Night”, “Vase with Fifteen Sunflowers”, or the portrait of himself.

Where You Can See Masterpieces of Vincent van Gogh | Galleries and Museums | RatePunk

Today he is widely acknowledged as one of the most brilliant, yet troubled artists in the history of modern art. Despite his early death - he died at 37 years old - Vincent van Gogh created around 900 oil paintings and even 1,500 prints. Amazing, isn't it? Most importantly, 2023 marks Vincent Van Gogh's 170th birthday so it is a great opportunity for various museums to display some of Van Gogh's masterpieces. So we checked the latest news on which art galleries are holding or going to hold exhibitions with some of Vincent Van Gogh's masterpieces.

Where to See Vincent Van Gogh's Artworks

There are several art galleries, art museums, and in general museums that display some of Vincent Van Goghs artworks. The most fascinating fact about Vincent Van Gogh is the beginning of hist art career. He started painting not from an early age but when he was 28 years old. Given the fact that he passed away 9 years later, he managed to create nearly 900 paintings. So no wonder that there is a huge list of museums that displays his artwork. However, I decided to present TOP 10 most popular masterpieces of Vincent Van Gogh and where you can see it.

# 1-2 FAMOUS VAN GOGH'S SUNFLOWERS
There are several paintings with sunflowers because Van Gogh completed 2 series starring sunflowers: Paris Sunflowers featuring 4 paitings, and Arles Sunflowers showcasing a five-piece series. So all these paintings exist in art galleries, and museums all over the world but the most well-known works are at New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art ( "Sunflowers" 1887), and London's National Gallery of Art ("Vase with Fourteen Sunflowers" 1888).

# 3 THE STARRY NIGHT (1889)
Hypnotic, calming, magical, mesmerizing... I can go on and on about this painting. It is the most famous impressionistic painting and many knows it. I used to believe that it is housed in Van Gogh Museum but I was wrong.  The Museum of Modern Art in New York City obtained this world-known painting in 1941.

#4 THE YELLOW HOUSE (1888)
For 14 months Van Gogh lived in Arles, a commune in the South of France. During this time, he dreamed of establishing a shared painting studio so he rented four rooms in the "Yellow House" located at 2 Place Lamartine. The painter immortalized the Yellow House in a painting and you can see it at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.

#5 BEDROOM IN ARLES (1888)
It is said that Van Gogh found his artistic inspiration in the most surprising source - his bedroom. He painted his bedroom 3 times, paying extreme attention to colors. Let's take a look at his letter to his brother Theo, if you are wondering why he chose such colors: “I have painted the walls pale violet. The ground with checked material. The wooden bed and the chairs, yellow like fresh butter; the sheet and the pillows, lemon light green. The bedspread, scarlet coloured. The window, green. The washbasin, orangey; the tank, blue. The doors, lilac. And, that is all. . . I have depicted no type of shade or shadow; I have only applied simple plain colors, like those in crêpes.” “Bedroom in Arles” painting is on display at Van Gogh Museum.

# 6 Stunning CAFÉ TERRACE AT NIGHT (1888)
There is no light without darkness.  The famous impressionism artist had a great talent to capture mesmerising nightscapes. "The Cafe Terrace at Night" shows a late summer evening in the Palace du Forum. The painting is on display at Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo, the Netherlands. This museum is like a cozy art gallery because it has the second-largest Van Gogh collection in the world (almost 90 paintings and over 180 drawings). I highly recommend visiting this museum if you happen to have some spare time.

#7 STARRY NIGHT OVER THE RHÔNE (1888)
The aquamarine sky, the mauve ground, and the luminous tones with bold brushstrokes emit so much energy and calmness at the same time. At a painting like this, you can stand for hours and still not get enough of such beauty. “Starry Night Over The Rhone” is housed at the Musee D'Orsay in Paris and it is part of the permanent collection. This truly spectacular museum displaying various famous masterpieces. One more a must-visit place for art lovers.

# 8 SELF-PORTRAIT (1889)
If you are going to visit the Musee D'Orsay, you will see not only “Starry Night Over The Rhone” but also “Self-Portrait” (1889). During the time Vincent Van Gogh spent in the mental hospital, he began exploring the self-portrait genre and he completed 30 portraits of himself.

#9  IRISES (1889)
Vincent Van Gogh often painted in the asylum's garden. In 1889 he painted the most well-known painting of Irises. To some of you it might look like a simple study, but in 1987 it was the most expensive painting ever sold to a private collector for $53.9 million. When the J.Paul Getty Museum repurchased and since then it has been there on display.

# 10 WHEATFIELD WITH CROWS (1890)
This painting has a really dark background. Two months before his suicide, Van Gogh left the hospital and moved to Auvers-sur-Oise. On July 27, 1890 he shot himself in a wheat field - a similar setting to his last painting he had completed. This painting is on display at Van Gogh Museum
