While we’ve consistently enjoyed positive experiences with the Van der Valk hotel chain, our recent visit was somewhat mixed. Eager for an early Christmas Eve dinner during our travels, we called ahead to confirm the kitchen’s availability. The staff assured us they could accommodate our request. However, upon arrival, our dining options were unexpectedly limited to either cooking the meat on a stone by yourself or opting for gehaktbal. Disappointingly, there were no alternatives such as salads, pasta, burgers, or other meat choices. Without any choice, we settled for two gehaktballen, only to find them with an overly sweet sauce that made them nearly inedible. Staff didn’t asked how we liked the food and why we left gehaktballen on our plates. On a positive note, the fries with mayonnaise and the wine upheld the usual high standard we associate with Van der Valk. Despite this hiccup, we appreciate your consistently good service and hope that future visits will align more closely with our past positive experiences.

Extremely poor. Rooms: Semen stains on the walls, rat droppings on the floor, rooms far smaller than advertised, drinks served in dirty glasses, food provided was inedible and out of date. Non-functional sauna also had poo stains on the benches. Inedible breakfast; weevil holes in the bread, mould in the yoghurt, undrinkable instant coffee all for the surcharge of 28 Euros, which was not clear as breakfast was advertised as included. Service: Reception staff lied about the price of the rooms, when we tried to escape, they claimed the only taxi would be 100 Euros for a 5 km journey. When we complained, the taxi disappeared and then had to pay 150 euros for an even shorter journey as punishment. Location: Apologies for being sarcastic, but a really fantastic view from the front of the underpass of a major motoway. The room had an even better view of a deserted building with the local ruffians injecting illicit drugs. Tried to escape for a walk, but was dangerous in sandals due to the amount of drug needles with blood on. Make sure to bring Wellington boots or Hazmat gear.
