Let me begin with something positive: the parking is free. Apart from that, there was not that much that we experienced as being positive. After the check-in, we learned that after going up with the elevator, we had to carry our luggage down a couple of stairs to get to our room. We had a view on the pool that was under reconstruction, which is not an issue in January, however, workmen starting already prior to 8 am to use their jackhammers (or whatever these noisy tools had been) was an issue. Likewise, listening to the flushing water from the bathroom next door is not what I expect at a place of this standard. Bottled water is in the fridge, but not for free, the bar was supposed to have an ‘happy hour’ according to the announcement in the elevator, but when we went there, we had to learn that no, there is no happy hour in winter. The breakfast was lower hotel standard, some items were already gone when you came late (but this might be acceptable in the off-season). Coffee machines were off, but you could order coffee from the staff – except for the last morning when no one was around. After waiting several minutes, we contacted the front desk, actually someone came and brought us coffee, but vanished immediately afterwards, never to be seen again, thus a refill was no option (and that was within the regular breakfast hours).|To be clear: this was off-season. However, when you run a four star hotel, it might not be the best policy to give guest the clear impression that they are not welcome. And in this respect, the only question asked at check-out was quite telling: “Did you like the city”? Actually, Syracuse is an amazing city, so we could say without hesitation ‘yes, very much’. Any question in this respect concerning our stay at Grand Hotel Villa Politi would have received a completely different response.
