We had high expectations for here based on recommendations from friends. There wasn’t necessarily anything bad about our stay I just don’t think it was a good as we’d anticipated. There’s a bit of an overall feel of it being for the upper classes i.e high tea, jazz bar etc. but in reality you’re sat opposite a rather industrial harbour. If you want class there’s better places. Just felt like a lot of people trying to be snobby, but really the place is a bit dated. Also, we were there into New Year and had to pay 90 MYR each to go into the bar area. There was a singer & a free glass of fizz, but I’ve never experienced having to pay to get into the hotel bar as a resident. The bar tenders sensed we were a bit annoyed and did comp us a cocktail each which was very kind of them. |The room was spacious with a lovely bathroom. Balcony was small with a fairly restricted view of the sea. The door to open to it was almost impossible and handle faulty! Signs of wear and tear in room and corridors. |The rooms were serviced well with complimentary soft drinks and water. The breakfast was very good with a large selection - I will absolutely credit here as it’s one of the best I’ve had. Complimentary tea, coffee & biscuits throughout the day in the area on 6th floor. |The infinity pool looks nice but there’s restricted sun after around 4pm and lots of palm trees that block it too - not the best hotel if you’re a bit of a sun worshipper. There is another pool on the front of the old hotel part I asked to use as there were no free loungers, but found the same issue there with lack of sun post 4pm. Both pools were rather cold for temperatures of 30+Oc outside. |We ordered food and drinks on a number of occasions and we had to ask staff two or three times for service and things took ages to arrive. If this hotel is so prestigious I wouldn’t expect this. |Overall, the staff were helpful but encountered very few warm interactions, the lobbies looked festive, the rooms were decent, but we did leave feeling it didn’t quite live up to the hype. That said, for just over £100 a night I don’t feel like it was perfectly fine. It’s a decent 4 star hotel, certainly not 5.
This was simply the best hotel I have ever stayed in. Our suite and all the public areas and facilities were just faultless. An unostentatious elegance and discreet luxury seems to be the principal value of the hotel. All the staff were helpful and friendly without being intrusive. I can particularly recommend the breakfast buffet at Sarkies for the quality and variety of the food, and the evening drinks and canapés in the Cornwallis room. In our suite the bed was exceptionally comfortable, and the air conditioning was quiet and set to a sensible (that is, not overly cold) temperature.
