We randomly found this place because we decided not to sleep in our tent for a night. We enjoyed our stay so much we came back a couple of days later and stayed for two nights in the 1850s wing. This place is quite the hidden gem. The breakfast is amazing and the real stars at dinner are the a la carte ribeye and the lamb shank... and the dining room of course, which has barely changed since the opening of the place. There are a few things to note. If you're looking for practicality and a convenient base for hiking, especially if you travel with family, ask for a room in the new building. The one-bedroom apartment sleeps 4 people and has a fully equipped kitchenette (even with dish washer). If you appreciate the more romantic side of these historic hotels, ask for a room in the old building. We had the most charming room with a big, private balcony overlooking the fjord. There is no elevator in that part of the hotel and everything is a bit more creaky, and well, old. We were attracted to the hotel for just that authentic atmosphere and loved it. You just have to know what you're looking for and the hotel will do what they can if you contact them.
