We have mixed feelings about this hotel and the staff. We spent one week at the Bungavila Hotel at the end of October 2023. When we arrived at around 11:00 AM, after a long flight, we were met with hostility by the older woman on reception. We thought we could check in straight away, but were told check-in was at 3:00 PM, even though we were the only people arriving at that time. There was no welcome to Hotel Bungavila, we hope you enjoy your stay; no customer service, just an abrupt manner, which gives the hotel a really bad image. Overall, our first impression of the hotel was not at all good.||Since this was our third visit to Madeira, we were able to look beyond the poor customer service of the older woman and take into account all the other positives from the hotel and our holiday. Other staff were very good. For example, Emanuel was absolutely brilliant! One lunchtime, he had approximately eight French visitors, who were extremely impatient. They were clearly in a hurry and had pre-booked their lunch. This meant that we had to wait over 35 minutes for our food to arrived, but Emanuel and another colleague were extremely courteous and handled the situation very well. A big shout out to Emanuel! We nominate him as hotel manager!||Other staff who were very helpful and friendly include Tatiana, Sonia and Cesar. The food in the Terrace Restaurant was very good at lunchtimes. However, in the evening, the food was a little bland. I really enjoyed the salads and the fruit. ||We stayed in a room on the sixth floor. We had spectacular views of the mountain and the sea. Our room was clean and spacious. It had everything that we needed. I used the leisure facilities and was very happy with the jacuzzi and sauna. ||Overall, we enjoyed our holiday. We would recommend the hotel despite the customer service of one member of staff. We thought the hotel was good value for money and was in a good location. You could quite easily get to the centre of Funchal by bus or taxis. Equally, if you enjoy walking, it was a 30 minute leisurely stroll.
