Deserves its high rating. Quiet, comfortable with a central location. Nice, if basic, rooms. Spotlessly clean. Very friendly and helpful staff. Excellent breakfast. Little bar for afternoon cup of tea or nightcap. Very well renovated retaining some original features. Train line does run directly behind but we didn't find that a problem. Has the slowest lift in the world.

I don’t typically write many reviews, but in the case of the Original Douro Hotel, I have to make an exception as it truly is an exceptional hotel. As others have noted, it represents a wonderful modern restoration of a once stately hotel. The combination of contemporary amenities & style with traditional architectural splendor really surpassed my expectations. You’ve already heard about the healthy and extensive breakfast fare in a large and attractive dining area. That was something I wasn’t expecting. In addition, the staff were simply kind, accommodating, and helpful — as if we were the sole focus of their attention. Alice and everyone behind the front desk were absolutely top-notch. In short, the distinct coziness & charm of the Original Douro Hotel and the level of service delivered by its staff made it appear more like a five star hotel. This is really what one should experience when visiting Régua!
