I recently sent a family member to stay at the New Safina Hotel in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and I was very disappointed. Below are her explanations. The hotel is in a good location, but the facilities and service are terrible. The room was not good for price and the bed was uncomfortable. The bathroom was also tiny and the hot water didn't work properly. The hotel staff was unfriendly and unhelpful. I asked for a towel several times, but I never received one. The hotel also has a restaurant, but the food is terrible. I ordered breakfast one morning, and it was barely edible. . Overall, I would not recommend staying at the New Safina Hotel. There are many other hotels in Dar es Salaam that are much better. Here are some specific examples of the poor service and facilities that I experienced: My room was not arranged properly when I arrived. The shower in my bathroom didn't work properly.(hot water) The water pressure was low and the temperature fluctuated. I asked for a towel several times, but I never received one. The hotel staff was unfriendly and unhelpful. They didn't seem to care about my needs. The food in the hotel restaurant was terrible.. I would not recommend staying at the New Safina Hotel to anyone. There are many other hotels in Dar es Salaam that are much better.
This hotel has a surprisingly high standard compared to other 'unknown' hotels in Dar that are not affiliated to an international network. Rooms are spotless and most have great bathrooms (better than the Doubletree). The hotel used to have problems with the water pump but now it seems to work well. Wireless internet is available in the lobby but not in all rooms. If you are on business in Dar and your appointments are near this hotel (e.g. Kijitonyama, Mwenge, Mikocheni) then this is an excellent choice. ||||However you need to know this:||1. You need to negotiate the rates. The rack rates are much too high given the hotel's location and the fact that the central facilities are very limited (no swimming pool etc.). ||2. This is not the type of hotel that has a nice restaurant or bar with outside area. Unfortunately there is also no nice place nearby. So you will spend significant money on taxis in the evening (which need to be pre-arranged as there are none parked outside). ||3. The location is quite far from the city cente - a taxi will cost at least TZS 10,000. In the mornings and afternoons the transport times can be substantial (up to 1 hr.). As such this is not the place to go if you have many appointments in town.
