Super 8 by Wyndham North Platte

I don't expect much out of a small-town Super 8. If it's clean, quiet, inexpensive, and basically functional, then I'm good. Unfortunately, this place was broken-down and unpleasant, and it's probably the owner's fault.||First, the positives:|- The bed was comfortable enough to sleep on|- The motel wasn't busy, so it was fairly quiet|- The heat (an in-window heater) worked on a cold night |- The price was right, around $60/night|- The nighttime staff was polite ||Unfortunately, there were a lot of problems:|- The room smelled really bad. It stank at first, and I woke up with a raw throat & plugged up sinuses. Our guess: this was a smoking room for decades & the quick new coat of paint didn't come close to fixing it.|- The "handicapped accessible" room was so small, and so cluttered, that it was nearly impossible to even get to the bed. I honestly had to stack the furniture up (see pic) just to make room for my wife's wheelchair to get through. I guess they want to make sure the room checks all of the boxes ("business desk!" "lounge chair!" "2 beds!" etc.), despite being far too small.||- There was a lack of needed maintenance. Nasty carpets, peeling paint, a broken luggage rack, broken ice machine, a toilet that only just managed to flush, a dirty refrigerator badly in need of defrosting, etc. A special little touch: instead of replacing the doorknobs in the bathroom with accessible ones, they put some kind of cheap plastic handles over the actual old ones, and when the one on the outside of the door broke off, they left the remaining pieces of it on the door (see pic).||Owners that are willing and able to spend the time and money to properly renovate this place, and to maintain it properly, could make this a pleasant, little motel. Unfortunately, as it is I can't recommend this place to anyone who isn't desperate.
